The lowest solid latex core, for stomach sleepers
A stomach sleeper who wants one steady shape should specify a solid latex core no higher than 3 inches, in a soft ILD band.
In short: Solid core, 2 to 3 inches high, soft enough to press flat under your head, pinholes if you run warm, and 95% or more natural latex.
The specification
| Element | What to specify | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Form | One solid moulded core rather than shredded fill, so the height stays the same all night | No figure stated |
| ILD band | 13 to 16, the rating published for a core sold for stomach sleepers. The same seller rates its softer grade 9 to 12 and its firmer grade 17 to 20 | Stomach-sleeper core; firmness grades |
| Core height | 2 inches to 2.6 inches for the thinnest published solid cores, inside the 3 inches or less guidance for stomach sleepers | 2-inch core; 2.6-inch core; NCOA |
| Ventilation | Pinholes through the core, given weight for hot sleepers and treated as a detail otherwise | No figure stated |
| Blend percentage to look for | At least 95% certified natural rubber latex by polymer weight, at most 5% processing chemicals or fillers | GOLS manual |

Why this follows from your answers
Lying face down turns the head to one side, so any height under it tips the neck backward. This position needs very little. The National Council on Aging's pillow guide puts the target for stomach sleepers at 3 inches or less. The thinnest solid cores in published seller data sit below that line, at 2 inches and 7 cm, or 2.6 inches. Wanting one shape is what makes the core solid. Shredded fill can be thinned by hand, but it shifts with every turn, while a solid core keeps the same height all night. The trade-off is set out in shredded versus solid latex.
Softness matters as much as height. The one published core sold for stomach sleepers is rated ILD 13 to 16. The same seller rates its softer grade 9 to 12 and its firmer grade 17 to 20. If you chose to sink in a little, aim for the lower end. If you chose to be held up firmly, stay near 16 rather than stepping up to a firm grade. A firm core this thin still lifts the head, and lift is what this position cannot afford.
Treat any ILD on a thin pillow with care. The figure is the force needed to press a 50-square-inch plate into foam, read after one minute, and the reference sample is usually 100 mm thick. A 2-inch core cannot be tested in that shape, so its rating describes the foam rather than the finished pillow. The guide to reading ILD explains why one number can feel different in two pillows.
With no history of reaction, the specification rests on comfort alone. Being unsure is common. Processing lowers the protein behind latex reactions, but it does not remove it. One study of five mattresses found no extractable protein in synthetic foam, but varying amounts in those containing natural latex. A 2021 study found deproteinized latex foam had lower extractable protein than standard natural latex foams. Anyone with past itching from gloves or balloons should ask an allergist first, since a face-down sleeper keeps skin against the cover all night. The washing and curing steps are covered in how natural latex is made.
Since the smell hardly bothers you, choose the blend on feel and durability. The organic latex standard requires at least 95% certified natural rubber latex by polymer weight, with at most 5% processing chemicals or fillers. The guide to the label percentage covers what lower blends mean. Pinholes through the core carry heat away from the face. Hot sleepers should weight them heavily. Others can treat them as a detail.
What changes it
Spending part of the night on your side raises the height you need, and the side sleeper guide takes over. Wanting to fold or bunch the pillow points to shredded fill instead. Any confirmed reaction to latex ends this specification.
What to check on your own bed
Published heights are measured unloaded. One seller lists a soft core at 15 cm unused and 9 to 11 cm in use, so expect a thin core to settle further under your head. Lie face down for five minutes. The neck should feel level, with no pull at the base of the skull. A soft mattress lets the chest sink, which can make even a 2-inch core feel tall.
A label saying low profile is not a height. On 11 October 2026 this site read eight seller product pages that publish a height for a low-profile latex pillow, and counted the figures they state. Two state under 3 inches (2 in, 2.6 in), five state 3 to 5 inches (3.5 to 4 in, 4 in, 4.5 in, 4.5 in, 5 in), and one states more than 5 inches (5.75 in). One of the 4.5-inch pages also describes the same pillow as about 5.5 inches deep, so confirm the number before trusting the label.
